What is Zumba? Is it a Dance or Exercise?

Workouts could be something really hard to be committed towards. As a result, to make working out for everyone fun, a lot of variations have been created over the years. This could be based on how much time you have, the kind of diet you consume or even based on your interests.

Speaking of interests, a type of workout based on interest is Zumba. Essentially it is a type of workout which uses music and movement. Zumba was started back in the 1990 by a choreographer as part of the dance fitness craze. The workout incorporates dance styles like mambo, samba, salsa, merengue, and a personal favourite hip-hop. Zumba shows some great results and also really takes your mind away from the pains of the workout. I see a really good distraction as people who like to get groovy are easily distracted by the routine and while doing that your body is also working out.

I think there is a lot of content on what Zumba is and a lot of instructors actively teaching it on a regular basis. If you are considering Zumba as your route towards fitness, I would suggest Popsugar Fitness channel on YouTube. They have tutorials for all levels of fitness and the instructors really take an effort to make you feel comfortable. It’s a good 30 minutes spent towards your body and you are also having fun.

But addressing the question — is it a dance or exercise? These are the factors that I personally thought of while making my decision for this question, and I would like to take you through it and would also want to know what you think.

Can you perform this on stage? You can perform a Zumba on a stage but who is really going to come to watch you? That was rhetoric. I don’t think there are actual performances for Zumba (I would really like to watch one though). As it cannot be performed, it means that there is not an active audience that watches it. Now you might say there are YouTube videos with tons of views meaning there are people watching. I agree, but we need to understand the intention of why people watch it. The viewers are watching to be a part of the workout and not watch for the purpose of entertainment.

I think I have made a fair argument but I have another question. Can you at least use those moves in a club/party? Technically I would say no, but if you actually go to parties you definitely see some weird steps being executed and that’s mainly because people do moves that they are most comfortable with and if you have been doing Zumba for a while you definitely have steps to flex in a party.

I still am no expert but from my understanding I would say that Zumba is NOT a dance form but it definitely is a dance. Regardless it still is something you should try if you want to make working out interesting or even get started. Zumba is just good in terms of working out but also seems like a very smart content/business opportunity. People are at home and gaining weight. Online Zumba really helps even introverts try it because no one is judging them and people would really want to lose weight in an innovative way.

This in no way is promoting any particular brand or way of workout. Everything I have shared is based on personal experience, I saw genuine results and also enjoyed the experience in the one month of Zumba that I did.
